We should all be mindful enough to recognize that if our efforts are not designed in such a way as to help others, then they are efforts of improper design…and they are efforts that are not worth pursuing.
I’ll give you an example.
I remember when I first started working as an artist (in a professional capacity). I was fueled almost entirely by youthful enthusiasm and reckless abandonment for how my efforts might affect others. But as the years went by and the letters/emails accumulated from people all over the world…letters that represented personal testimonials and triumphs from people regarding how much one of my t-shirts designs or illustrations affected them, it hit me like a ton of bricks. IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO AFFECT SOMEONE IN A POSITIVE WAY…WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE NOT TO? In fact, (upon realization of having this ability) for me it became what was essentially my civic duty.
These days I’m mindful of what can or can’t be of help to someone, and I’m very aware of what our society needs more than anything… it needs people with good intentions, who are committed to making the conscious effort to connect with others.
And here we are. 🙂
